Kaja Silverman in "Fragments of a Fashionable Discourse" had a lot of valid and interesting points. The quote that I like the most in this read is the "male subject is as dependent upon the gaze of the Other as is the female subject, and as solicitous of it-in other words, that he is as fundamentally exhibitionistic. The Great Masculine Renunciation must consequently be understood not as the complete aphanisis of male specularity, but as its disavowal". First I had to understand what she really meant in these few sentences. It is almost the desire that men eagerly seek. That he to appreciates the gaze of others as if he has been validated in some way. Also that fact that he is as "fundamentally exhibitionistic" to grab this attention through the gaze of others and to enjoy this attention. That this behavior should not be mistaken for the disappearance of his masculine characteristics next to a women but also to be acknowledged too.
This quote is very intriguing. It relates to the idea that people try to validate their own identities and gender through the assumptions of society and the way that others identify what is masculine and/or feminine.
ReplyDeleteIt is nterestimg how we use general assumptions in order to make sense of ourselves. I believe it is important to be critical thinkers about it and that actually fashion is a mirror of what is happening in society.
