Cantigas ~ 'The Songs'

0041-0505-0516-1054.html.jpgI really like the readings from the Songs of Holy Mary of Alfonso X, The Wise. As I read these lyrics and listened to a few clips online, I could see some similar storyline in the music that we hear on the radio today. In the song 186 about the evil mother in law who is trying to make her son believe his wife is cheating on him is a perfect example of modern day drama. Most of what we hear today on the radio is filled with all sort of drama and we are left to fabricate our own images of what the artist is portraying. I really found it interesting that these medieval songs about "miracles" are filled with such scandal. It's very interesting to see how music has evolved but also sticking to its core foundation.

  2. Modern music today also compares to the medieval songs through what is left out. Many times lyrics can be confusing and the listener is left to wonder what the hidden message of the song is. Additionally we see the visuals of songs through music videos, which tell stories in themselves that many time may not even seem to relate to the song. The way these music videos are portrayed depends heavily on the filmographer in the same way that the medieval pictures depended on the artist perception of the song

  3. Eliane, i know what you mean. It is also so interesting for me to see such scandalous songs existed hundreds of years ago. It looks like story telling has been always one of the most powerful way to unconsciously change people's mind. Look at the media how it brain washes people, the medium changes with technology but the stories still have the same effect! A if we will never learn.
