Creating a Role Through Aesthetics

Sontag suggests that “homosexuals have pinned their integration into society on promoting the aesthetic sense." “RuPaul’s Drag Race” certainly displays this idea. This show displays a group of homosexuals making their own place as drag queens, and as a result, their goal is to be as beautiful and feminine as possible. Also, in the episode titled “Jocks in Frocks” was an example of how greatly these drag queens have made their own place in society. The fact that the show was able to find five straight jocks to attempt to be drag queens on national television asserts that being a drag queen is not even completely reserved for homosexuals any more. As a result, they are viewed as a more common member of society now, and they have started this process through Sontag’s idea. They focused on beauty in order to acclimate.
