Gender Identity in Fashion
Since the beginning of time, it has been predetermined that girls are the ones who can wear heels and skirts while the guys are the ones to rock suits and ties. This idea of the past is one that has changed quite often with the passing of time and the general acceptance of people who are either bi, gay, lesbian, or transgender. The most recent example that I can think of in my experience that very apparently differed from the norm was when, at my senior prom, two girls in my grade went together as dates. One wore the traditional prom dress with the hair done and the makeup all made up, while the other one opted for the suit and tie look. It was something that I had never really seen before and some people saw it as almost a joke until they realized that this girl was completely serious and completely comfortable going against the norm of society and wearing the thing that she felt the most comfortable in.

This is an interesting topic. I argue that it might be difficult for people in our society to see young girls dress in tuxedos or men's apparel because adolescents are not really taught to accept this difference. Instead, kids are ostrasized for being different or identifying with a gender that would normally not be their own. In this case, it becomes a greater issue when young kids cannot comprehend gender identity and take to violence as their natural reaction because of what they were taught to believe. This is what scares me about society. For example: I lived in Oxnard, California about 1/2 a mile from E.O. Green Middle School where a boy shot his classmate for being gay. The victim would go to school with make-up, earrings and sometimes heals. Gender identity is becoming more and more prevalent in youth then it was before. Great topic!
ReplyDeleteI believe that fashion is one of the ways in which society has tried to enhance and maintain the status quo of how the members of each society should behave. As an example, women's clothes used to be only large dresses not permitting them to do hard work or ride a horse easily. The evolution of women's activities were shown in the evolution of fashion at the same time.
